The standard Version 2 ecards are now primarily used as hire stock, for use in large races using contact punching only, although they can be used with the new proximity controls provided there is physical contact with the unit.
Version 3 ecards, the enhanced ecard with an LCD (display window), are now the standard ecard product and can be used for both contact punching and punch-free races (such as skiing, cross-country, marathon & MTBO). They can be used in conjunction with the both conventional controls and the new "eLine" wireless controls, as well as with the new proximity controls.
Emit controls are fixed with a preset number at manufacture, which stays with the control for the duration of its life. They are numbered from 31 - 249, less 66, 68, 86, 89, 98, 99, 186, 189, 198, and 199 giving 209 different numbers to choose from.
Emit controls do not bleep. This saves battery power, makes for a longer unit life and is not off-putting to a competitor at multiple control sites "was it mine that bleeped?". Provided the card is inserted fully, a unique pin prick will be obtained on the water-resistant backup card, proving the competitor has visited the control site, with no extra effort on the competitor's part, in case of disputes.
