The extensive scrub clearance programme that has been going on for the last
couple of years has made Bulford ranges an even faster area than it used to
be so I was expecting fast times. However, I was still surprised by some of
the times achieved on the Green course. I was expecting the Gallopen winner
to just get under 40 mins with the leading Army runners taking between 32 and
35 minutes. The Gallopen winner took 32.40 with the leading army runner taking
24.37 min (5.33min/km!). In hindsight I should have stuck in another couple
of controls spread over an extra half km. However, 190 people ran the course
and this did lead to bunching which meant that for a lot of competitors it was
a bit like a cross country race with the result that some faster than normal
times were achieved.
Having analysed all the results I think the other 7 courses were all just about
right.
Those on the Red and Light Green courses will have encountered the contractors
who were busy cutting and burning 7 hectares of scrub in the middle of the area.
We didn't know this was going to happen until Friday afternoon. Luckily it only
affected one control which was a very large depression. It was actually easier
to see after the contractors had removed all the vegetation around it. I hope
your runs were not affected too much.
Finally, I enjoyed working with SLOG and BAOC on this event and would like to
thank Lewis Watson and Phil Davies for their assistance and Pat Barclay for
his helpful controlling.
