Planner's CommentsMy only real objective was planning courses that provided an enjoyable challenge for the NWO Galoppen. I hope this was achieved and if it was then I'm very grateful for the advice given by the event controller Roger Baker and the excellent organisation and help provided by the NWO membership. Well done everyone.
A word of caution to all event organisers and planners - beware the farming land set aside rules!!! Those of you who had a long walk to registration can thank the Government for the bureaucracy surrounding the set aside rules. Chris Harrison (NWO)
Controller's CommentsWe, and the most co-operative farmer, had hoped to be able to use his large set-aside field on the south edge of the map for car parking and the event HQ. It was only after the courses had been finalised that it became clear that the hoped for confirmation from DEFRA would not be forthcoming. Forest Road parking was the only alternative and so, for safety reasons, a new Start and Finish had to be found on either side of this road near to where most courses already crossed it. Registration was therefore sited as near these as possible.Hence some of you were parked ever such a long way away. Thank you for being cheerful about it. We trust that despite the mud the ground was stony enough underneath for you to extract your car without mishap. Courses were planned to try to minimise runs through the major areas of forestry activity but on senior courses piles of brashings and felled timber will have made ground detail harder to find. However we hope you all remember a few legs of fast running on a carpet of beech leaves and the thrill of finding the control in the exact spot where you thought it should be! Numbers attending exceeded expectations and thank you to those who willingly allowed your maps to be re-cycled. If you would like to receive a replacement, do give the Organiser a ring or send her an e-mail We are sorry about the long queue which built up at Registration, and will be reviewing procedures to see how things could be speeded up. One suggestion is that as it is quicker to process them, one desk should be dedicated to BOF members. Chris’ courses seem to have been well received. Many folk appreciated how much off-path orienteering they did - though one commented that he couldn’t keep up the mental alertness required and opted for path routes towards the end of his course. Roger Baker, TVOC
Organiser's CommentsOur struggles with government bureaucracy have already been documented so I shall say no more on that score. This was the first time that I’d ever organised an Orienteering event and if you’d asked me two weeks ago I would have said that I’d bitten off more than I could chew! But then on Sunday morning all the NWO volunteers turned up (thank-you!) and got on with their jobs, and surprisingly everything slotted into place. And then lots of Orienteers turned up as well… It was great to speak to people at the finish and find out how much they enjoyed the courses, so all credit to Chris and Roger for the planning. Thanks to Roger for his many suggestions on organising as well. Apologies for the queues that you had to endure at Registration. I think the hold up was due to entering information into computers for EMIT registration so Roger’s suggestion of having separate queues for BOF and non-BOF might sort out the problem. It is defiantly something to consider for next time. My big worry was the Car Parking, so a big thank-you to you all for being patient and considerate about the linear parking. I hope the walk wasn’t too bad. Finally, thank-you to those of you that gave up your maps. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for a replacement. Louise Phelps (NWO)
