Planner's CommentsAwaited... Mike Bray, SN
Controller's CommentsAfter initial problems in getting the area and map finalised, the planning for the event progressed well through August and early September. The area offers a good variety of terrain including open heath and forest, together with some areas of fine contours and manmade features, all of which made for a good area for a score event. My appreciation goes to all of the junior squad helpers on the day and particularly to Mike Bray, who planned the event and spent many days (and some evenings!) on the area, Tim Graham , for stepping into the organser's role at the last minute, and to Colin, Allan and Jerry from BAOC for providing equipment and on the day logistics. The event was blessed with good weather and only positive comments, which made my job very easy. Dave Rogers, BKO and SCOA Junior Squad Manager
Organiser's CommentsFrom an organiser's point of view the event went extremely well. I had only been asked to help with the organisation two weeks before the event, so I had a busy two weeks to finalise the plans that Dave Rogers had put in place. Luckily we had lots of willing helpers in the Junior Squad who were to make the running of the day very straightforward indeed. The weather was very kind to us on the day. Fortunately the torrential rain that had woken me at 4am, stopped its onslaught as I was driving to the event, to be replaced by blue skies for the rest of the day. I was pleased to receive some very complimentary comments from many competitors. I was a little worried when the local police drove up wanting to talk to the organiser, but was relieved when they only wanted to take up orienteering themselves. The number of competitors was a little low, but this may have been due to the early bad weather and the A31 road closures for those coming from the West. In spite of that, the event has again provided the SCOA Junior Squad with useful funds to continue its activities. My thanks to all those who came along and to the helpers. My especial thanks to the planner Mike Bray, controller Dave Rogers, the EMIT team of Jerry Newcombe and Allan Farrington, and to Colin Dickson for the equipment loan from BAOC. Tim Graham, SOC |
